I'm the proud owner of a 1977 911S with the original 2.7 so I'd hardly consider myself a Debbie Downer.
The mid-years got a bad rap at one point and it's just grown ever since; I mean, even the PCA (
https://www.pca.org/news/model-guide-air-cooled-911s-on-a-budget-1974-1977) has a somewhat dismal opinion of them. Not to mention the echo chamber here and on Rennlist about how the engines are going to fail and they're only good for hotrods or backdates. SC's pull head studs too, and it's no cheaper to rebuild an SC than a mid-year.
Frankly that attitude allowed me to buy one as the SC's are all getting expensive and the longhoods are absurdly priced.
The mid-year 911's drive like the early cars, are light and nimble, are fully galvanized, don't have much of the SC bloat, cost a fraction of the other 911's and have rev-happy, torquey motors that are perfect for street driving.
For my money, a mid-year beats an SC any day.
