In my experience,
You will need to remove the support cross member.
You will need to drain the gear oil.
You just need to remove the grub-set screw bolt and slide out the drive gear assembly.
I would replace the entire assembly rather than just the front section. The pinion gear that drives it may be different. There are a few different versions.
