That's a big pear! Are they really soft or firm and crunchy. It looks like the soft and juicy variety to me (which is my favorite). I've never lived anywhere that I got fruit fresh from the tree except when I was a kid, my grandfather had a yellow grapefruit tree. It was very sour and required sugar. And I lived near a place that had a pomello tree. I used to swipe a pomello from time to time, and they were very, very good.
When I was about 8, we moved to Japan. I remember being a kid and being AMAZED at the apples and carrots that we got in Japan.
And they we pretty much always individually packaged in these mesh, foam sleeves like in the pic below (but I don't remember them being that glossy).
