I remember in about 1966 we had the Encyclopedia Britannica and it had a yearly update book with the new discoveries and new words in it. I was reading through the list of new words and astronaut was one, and I thought it was cool I knew that word.
Then they had the word, hippy. The definition was something like "one who is hip" and that did not help me at all.
Then in 1968 we moved to Hawaii for the second time. We drove to San Fransisco to spend two days with some friends and await our flight to Hawaii on military transport. The friends loaded us up in the car and took us to the Haight-Ashbury district and I suddenly learned what a hippy was. We parked and looked around and went into some poster stores and there was a bad stinky smell everywhere. It was later I discover that the awful stink was marijuana. As a teenager of a USAF dad I did not fit in at all with that crowd. I do wish I had bought a few dozen poster and been smart enough to have stored them somehow for sale now. It was interesting. It was just before I got into photography so I have no photos of the trip.
I should have used my cell phone to take pictures!
