Use the 12" knife and always stay smooth when applying.
Sandpaper on a pole or 2x4 with big sweeps will help you feel the differences. 60 or 80 grit knocks it down fast.
The flaws will show up with that first coat of primer.
You can always add another skim coat to low spots after that, but any lumps will cause problems.
