This is the way I am familiar with differentiating the models throughout the years. Short wheelbase(A,B) -> Long Hood(C,D,E,F) -> Mid year(G) -> SC(G) -> 3.2 Carerra(G) -> 964 -> 993 ->996 -> 997 -> 991 -> 992.

I could be off on some of the letter designations, G is the only one I hear commonly used. Sometimes I hear the "long hoods" referred to as F-body cars.
