You are right that he had been vaccinated,
maybe he would have pulled through, but maybe not.
According to the CDC the vax is not perfect for preventing death,

Here is their chart that shows more unvax'd die from this than vax'd (about 10:1)
They don't show the percentage vax'd vs non-vax'd during that period. (much larger population of unvax'd?)

But interestingly the percentage of vax'd deaths is on the rise, relative to the unvax'd.
We are told that with time away from the vax decreases the effectiveness. (boosters needed)
These vaccines are far from perfect, that is for sure. People who claim otherwise do not like to "follow the science" the numbers.
