Our home and two detached garages all have metal roofing . On the house we have metal installed over a single layer of shingles . This can be done IF the shingles are laying flat ( not curled ) AND a membrane designed for this purpose is installed over the shingles before the metal is installed. The membrane acts as a buffer for expansion/contraction between the metal and the shingles and is self sealing around the screws . We are on year four and no issues and very quiet in rain storms .

My man cave garage is a pole barn so rafters spaced about Evey 5' with perlons . The metal panels are screwed to the perlons. . The ceiling is insulated so it also is quiet in rain storms . Our parking garage is also an enclosed pole barn . Rafter/perlon construction but no ceiling or roof insulation . This is a loud echo chamber when it's raining hard but that's ok as it's just to park our two daily drivers in.

On all three buildings we have had zero issues to date . But we are only in year four or less so I wouldn't expect any issues this early . Years 20 and beyond will be more telling. But my expectations are these are the last roof's I will have in my lifetime 😁
