We had a metal roof installed last year and love it.
But there are a couple of issues to consider. One, if you live in an area that sees lots of snow (and depending on the pitch of your roof), there could be problems with sudden (and dangerous) releases of large snow-loads. Most metal roof manufacturers offer optional accessory vertical plates to help mitigate this.
Another possible issue, especially if your current roof system depends on gutters to help direct water flow away from vulnerable areas around your house (such as window wells and entryways), is that the installation of a metal roof can completely change the dynamics of water shedding, which can be further influenced by the possible necessity of the complete removal of any existing gutter system, which in turn might mean needing to do a bit of re-designing/changing the landscape around your house to facilitate appropriate and effective drainage based on your new roof.
Yet a third possible issue is related to your environment...especially if you live near salt water. On a recent trip to the Maine coast, my wife and I noticed that nobody who lived by the water had a metal roof...which makes perfect sense as salt (as we here all know) can wreak havoc on (even painted) metal.
