I had a Certainteed Matterhorn roof installed last year and couldn’t be happier. Not quite the standing seam you’re asking about but instead a series of panels that look like slate tile. It was was a $10k premium over 30 year shingles ($15k vs $25k) but that included full tear off of 3 layers including the original cedar shake, replacement with plywood and new gutters. But - it’s the last roof I’ll ever do and I’m never moving so good lord willing I’ve got another 50 years left living under it so the extra $ should be well worth it.
As far as rain noise - only minor above what the old shingle roof had and I work every day from the attic. I find the quiet pitter patter soothing at this point.
