I came really close to buying a car like that about ten years ago. It presented as an 86 Carrera, but had a 68S vin.

I poured all over the photos and it looked like an immaculately done “conversion” to all the 1986 parts, and I initially thought I could strip it all and build myself a 68S hot rod.

Then I requested just a couple more shots of the trunk area. It had been clipped. It was only 68 from the strut towers forward. It was a really good job, with factory welds drilled out and then redone with the clip. Someone put a lot of time and effort into saving that 3.2 Carrera.

A guy eventually bought it, and was showing it off on early S. They broke his heart.
