The lock assembly came out after I undid the single screw and unplugged the connector on the back. Nothing else had to be unscrewed, I'm not sure if that's normal. Wayne Dempsey's book of 911 projects says that you may or may not need to loosen a "nut that holds the ignition switch onto the steering wheel lock" Figure 2 on p. 213 shows the assembly from under the dashboard and says make sure to loosen the steering wheel lock bolt on the left. I'm unclear on whether that's left in the picture or left facing the dash from outside.
In the picture I took below of my assembly, it looks like the socket the arrow is pointing to is a bit worn, and possibly it also is where a bolt is supposed to locate that end? I do not see any other feature that appears able to locate the end near the steering column with precision.
The pin seems to be undamaged and moves smoothly. What looks like damage on the end where the pin slides in and out is not as bad as it appears. Mostly discoloration.
So...maybe I need a new $800 assembly, or maybe I just need a missing bolt or two.
