Your doc is wrong. Spain was the hero country in this naming.
Spain was the only country talking openly and honestly about the flu. People looking for accurate information turned to Spanish news papers. Uninformed people in the States fought about how many layers of gauze masks needed to be and how to kill people's dogs (because everyone knows that the dog carry the flu... they didn't)
Misinformation abounds in these situations.
