Personally I would have approached the trek to the shed with a little more stealthiness. Had this truly been an intruder you had the jump on him. You knew he was there but he didn't know you knew he was there. Never underestimate what a trapped animal might do. For all we know an intruder might come out shooting tag you with a round and mortally wound you.

Stealth could have been on yourside. Get yourself in position at a distance with cover and then turn on the sun to announce you are there. You would have cover and be ready, he would be blinded by the light.
Just this mornng I was looking at various night vision monoculars and binoculars.
Right not kind of leaning towards these.
