Maybe ratings have something to do with it. When a contestant first begins a big-money run, I would imagine that the show's ratings go up. But after seeing that same contestant continue to crush the competition day after day, maybe people start to tune out and cause the ratings to slip. That's when the producers might ask them to step aside so the regular turnover of all three contestants can resume. Just a guess on my part...I still enjoy the show, no matter what.
The producers are VERY careful how they speak to the contestants. I've read several articles on how the show handles the questions and contestants. It has to do with the trouble the game show industry got into back in the '50's. If the contestant decides to take a fall you can bet its all their decision with no input from the show.
