901 Transaxle CV Output Flange Dilimma

I need to remove the CV style output flanges on my transaxle (901.301.101.02), but having difficulty determining how to perform the task.

Normally, I'd expect to see small circular plugs covering the bolts holding the flanges to the shaft, or just the bolt heads ... but this one has me stumped.

On each side, there's a circlip holding some sort of aluminum(?) 'plate' with what first appeared to have a small bolt protruding from it, but neither a 11mm or 12mm would fit the head - then, upon closer examination, realized that it's not a hex-head bolt at all

I removed the circlips, but was unable to grasp the protrusions on the 'plates' with enough leverage to remove them. I don't want to damage anything.

Anybody else experienced this? How do I get these 'plates' out? - Is there a special puller for these?
