The amount of water to remain hydrated in temperatures above 100 degrees is surprising. There are hundreds of websites with the info.
Many years later, during Survival, Escape, Resistance and Evasion School (summer time for my glass in Warner Springs, California and parts of the desert) they lined all the POWs up at regular intervals and made us drink.
Drink before you feel thirsty was the cornerstone of the desert training.
The onset of cramps, fatigue and confusion happens quickly.
