The e-code headlights are a huge upgrade, highly suggest going that route for easy installation and proper look (if you're interested in that sort of thing).
The other excellent bang-for-the-buck upgrade is using a relay harness to bump the voltage at the lights. This takes the switch in the dash out of the power circuit to give you less voltage drop. More voltage at the bulb = more light output.
I did both of these on my car and have more than enough light for night driving.
