In my last house, I had a Dayton hoist to move motorcycles from one of my garages up into a workshop above, through a removable section of the floor. It had a 500 pound capacity, only about a 10 foot travel distance because of the short length of the wire rope (it had a single pulley) and I don’t think it was made in the USA. It got the job done, but it was expensive at $1300 and I had some issues with the wire rope wrapping itself between the backside of the drum and the housing a couple times.

I did get quite a bit of use out of it, but I had a little more elaborate system than the one you’re probably contemplating. If you just have a fixed point above to hang it from, it limits what you can do with it.

I’m not sure something that cost $200 or $300 would be worth buying.

If it’s just for a once in a blue moon kind of a thing, a chain fall might be the answer. They are dead nuts reliable and not all that much work. A little slow, yes, but…
