It's open....finally, after all my efforts, I found a combination of manipulations that got the door open. It was pushing down on the link for the outside door opener combined with holding the lock latch fully unlocked and smacking the door open latch with a small tool {hammer} that finally unlatched the door. Final analysis is the lubricant in the outer door latch was gummed up and the trigger mechanism wouldn't release. Anyhow, it's open and I have all the replacement parts to move on. YAHOO!
