I did sort of the same thing. I store my fishing kayak on 2 plastic/foldable saw horses. I then mounted 3 sets of 2x4s on the wall at 18" intervals so I could store 3 inflatable paddle boards above my Kayak. There is still enough room under my kayak for two totes of gear. On the wall next to them I mounted a metal paddle hanger, but had to thread some rubber hose onto the protruding prongs to make the paddles stay in place.
