Another perspective as someone who is generally an audiophile, worked for years mixing sound for bands, etc...
The sound stage effect in a car is of course a controversial topic because of the various compromises. I find it can be done without too much trouble with or without rear speakers. I actually favor having rear speakers for an optional fill effect.
Playing with the balance and fader with front and rear speakers installed can produce a decent sound stage for just the driver (as you can always adjust the fader completely forward if you just want a pure stereo effect arriving from in front of you). If nothing else, the rear speakers can make the sound more enjoyable for multiple parties in the car at other times.
Just my 2 cents...in other words, I recommend rear speakers for general utility...
