When I hang pictures, and especially when I hang heavy stuff like big mirrors. there are two hooks on the wall and the braided wire is strung in a sort of figure-8 pattern. The hooks do not need to be level. With this method, there is a redundant system. Also, once the mirror is adjusted level, it will no longer move and get out of adjustment. The wire goes from one hook on the mirror to the nearby hook on the wall, then to the hook on the other side of the mirror, then up to the other hook on the wall, then back to the original hook on the mirror.
