My childhood was spent on a block of working class houses. The majority of kids on the block were baby boomers. Long before the internet, only a few had TV.

This would have NEVER happened in that neighborhood. Every so often, the moms would get together to play cards, drink coffee and chat. We kids hated these gatherings bacause if you'd done something wrong that your mom didn't know about she'd know then.

Societal change....not all of it has been good. Such a house would have been very noticed back then.
My friends and I would walk to school starting in first grade. We didn't have school buses. My parents divorced when I was two. I was raised by my mother as my father said in California when we moved back to NJ. Becasue my mother worked after school I would often walk to her work rather then go home. Our town had a main street (Pacific Ave) like most small towns. I would stop in various stores on my way to see my mother. Stop in on store after another Jackson's Drug store buy a pice of candy or two, The card shop and look at art suppplies, the hobby shop with the mean old guy and at the models, Allen's mens store and look at the Cub and Boy Scout stuff and Pinewood Derby cars.

Unbeknownst to me after I left a store they would call to my mothers work and let her know I just left. When I arrived at my mothers work she would say what were you doing here, what were you doing there? I was scared to death to be out of line because she somehow knew where I was and what I was doing all of the time.

It was great.
