My understanding is that Porsche, like most manufacturers build and test all sorts of prototype vehicles just to test a cars systems. Evidently that one was to test cooling of the radiators.
We all likely remember Porsche used a VW rabbit, cut it half lenghtwize to widen it, and stuffed a 928 chassis under it.
Of course Porsche built two eight cylinder 914s.
When Dr. Helmut Bott came to Oklahoma to talk to the War Bonnet Tech session, his talk was about his job at Porsche. He said he had a prototype 959 as his company car. He talked about how driving it around in Germany, and at Stuttgart in particular got no second looks at all from the locals. His fun weekend toy was a Model T. He said driving that he had all sorts of attention, and waves and horns honking in acknowledgment. A Model T is about as far away from a 959 as two cars can be, and he loved driving it.
