I lived in Japan twice when I was younger, late 70s and mid 80s. We did have one fairly largish (not THAT large) earthquake the first time that I was there. Quakes were really frequent (pretty much weekly) but REALLY mild. You'd be sitting there watching TV and look at others in the room and say "did you feel that?" I was surprised (a little disappointed) that the various times that I've been in Cali, I've never felt anything. But then different places can have very different characteristics.
