I wouldn't use a suction cup mount on either leather or vinyl. you hen I very high likelihood of pulling the covering loose from the dash. always stick your suction cup mounts to the glass. My 84 originally had the factory dash covered in leather. As mentioned above the true leather covered dashes have a visible seam with the stitching going the full length left to right across the top of the dash. Mine had shrunk and distorted from getting wet due to a bad windshield seal before I got the car. I had it recovered in vinyl, but the shop used a different vinyl supplier than typical due to color match for my interior. the new vinyl had an adverse reaction to the glue they used and caused it to not adhere, so I had to send it back and have it redone. the second time they used leather and it turned out great.
