There is (was) a guy I used for machine shop work that operated out of his home garage for years, but he decided to close down @2 months ago. He was my former neighbor actually, retired from Federal contracting. Very different and quirky kind of guy, but also
very talented, similar to say....Jesse James talented. His prices were very reasonable as well. So anything that required lathing, mill, machining or TIGing, he was my guy. Unfortunately, he has decided to just stop what he's doing, something about potential litigation from 'customers'.
To give you an idea of his far-reaching abilities you never knew what he would be working when you rolled up in his driveway; IE: MB Gull-Wing looking over an engine fuel related issue, Vincent Black Shadow that needed a part fabricated, antique heirloom silver dinnerware where the grandkid decided to twist all the pieces into oblivion, and more.
So then I roll over to a guy / family I've known for @30 years where the dad is now retired and his two 'kids' are running the show. Unfortunately, his kids have decided to double+ over charge for everything they do, therefor p*ssing me off so bad, I'll never return. How much over? Well, let me tell you. I took them 2 new front hubs / rotors to have: a) stud pattern changed from 5X5" to 5X4-3/4" b) Have the outside centering hub snout turned down @.180" Know what the bill was? $735.00
OK, so now what? I still need stuff done occasionally. I find this 'old' (4 years older than me) guy in a small local shop outside of my area - to have some other hubs inside bore taken down another .220". I picked them up this morning, he only charges me $60, but I give him $80, told him to keep it, don't need a receipt. Then I said I look forward to finally finding a good guy, I'll bring more work in the future. He said: "well, you better make it soon...………….'cause I'm closing down in March....
