I watched Sky Sports this morning and got a good line on when the SC actually began.
My .02 on how to fix what transpired at the end: Once SC is deployed and has been caught up by the front runners begin allowing unlapping but only in the sectors that are clear. Then when drivers get to the sector with the wreck, make them get down to a SC type speed, once clear then get to back of field.
They could have done this on or about lap 54 or 55 at latest yesterday. Merc was on the radio to Hamilton on 55 discussing the SC and other issues. At that point there was no reason to keep the lapped cars in place.
This was always going to end in pain for one team/driver. The ending was just a little wonky. But in my opinion, Masi wanted to let them race. I think Merc should have had Hammy get tires and fight it out. That gamble was never going to work unless they ended under SC.
I also think if the race had ended under SC there would be even more fans and certainly RB very upset. Especially after the first lap when no action was taken. There is a big belief that FIA favors Merc and Hammy and that certainly wouldn't have helped. Some pundits were saying that would have been bad for the sport.
Martin Brundle was on Sky this morning. He said the constant lobbying of Masi by the teams really is wrong and needs to stop. 100% agree
