i honestly went to the Tornado thread to see if that posting elicited the same empathetic response. "what, you picked tornado alley to live? whatever! i'm bbq-ing under my shade umbrella right now!". i am happy to report there was only genuine sympathy in that thread.

I am sympathetic to folks that live where there are "difficulties" ...as long as they do not work hard to make them worse (or elect people that do) and then expect me to pay for it. I noted today that a lot of areas that defunded police and spent the money on other things are asking the Federal government for money to solve the problems they created...using money collected from people/cities/states that made better choices.
As far as desert areas, it seems like local officials would work hard to keep the population within the numbers that the water supply could support. If they want to add people, add water sources/storage. They used to do that in LA, Albuquerque, Denver, etc. When I bought my first home in CO (we called it our "little house on the prairie"), the home builder was not permitted until the infrastructure was put in place (roads, schools, fire dept, water supply, sewage, garbage, police, etc.) to support the increase (based on expected usage). My builder built all that so they could build the large subdivision. Otherwise, they would have had to wait on the city.
