The engine drives the compressor with the belt "compressor clutch engaged or not". Whatever miniscule gain the engine finds, by decreasing the parasitic loss by removing the belt, will still exist.
OP, remove the system entirely, convert it to 134a, or use the current aftermarket A/C system that is popular on this forum.
