I could live in a motorhome. OTOH, my wife could not. Big houses are hard to deal with in every respect, but when they get so large that they require outside help, that's too much for me. Honestly, I think about 1.5 bedrooms for every occupant is just about right. Min 3 car garage, but more than that, out buildings for whatever needs the property requires. IOW, if you have a tractor (etc.), you get a barn. If you have a small machine shop, as I do, you get a separate shop building.
Garages are for cars and I have a 2-car garage with 2 cars in it full time as well as my workbench and shop area. It's too freakin' crowded. My woodshop is in a carport attached to the garage. Keeps the sawdust out of the garage. But bad weather can dampen that idea. Need another shop.
So, back to the 1.5 bedrooms per resident. This allows for hobbies, offices, caves, whatever. Give me what I need and if it comes with a view, I'll consider myself lucky. I rather not have neighbors and live in view challenged place than live at the beach being able to shake hands with the neighbor leaning out of the window.
