IMHO - If you avoid the cities in any state you will sidestep 99% of that states problems.
i.e. my state of FloRida - Miami (most of south Florida actually) - Tampa - Orlando (downtown not Disney) - Jacksonville and Tallahassee are all sketchy and you have to be on your toes.
Tallahassee - the only place in Florida I have walked out of my hotel in the evening and felt like we were in imminent danger and needed to get off the street we were walking on. A sad commentary about our states capitol.
Since the start of this pandemic, I find myself avoiding cities more and enjoying little towns all over the state. You can typically cover a little downtown area in one weekend.
We have been to about 4 little towns so far in the last 18 months and have many more road trips to little towns on our radar.
