Reagan favorable to Iran? Who has the Alzheimers? You must not remember the campaign. Much of the east coast press painted Reagan a a super-aggressive hawk and predicted that his first act as President, if elected, would be to invade Iran. Publicly, Reagan would not deny such intent. Khomeini decided that releasing the hostages was more practical than being invaded.
