The simple fact of the matter was that the Iranians would never have released the hostages to the Carter Administration.
No matter what.
The ultimate Iranian f*** you was to release them to the new (anybody but Carter) administration without so much as a whimper.
Sometimes the simplest answer is the simplest. This time it was.
