I stand by my case. I've heard em driven in anger at Le Mans Classic and they sound ed meaner then the 917. Porsche 904 is the mack daddy.
They started the racing name for Porsche, in the Track, at the Rallies, and in public.
None did it all.
That Lola GT, yes it looks nice
but it did not win rallies, races, it's a pretty much a high end kit car powered by a transplanted Ford V8.
The 904 however started the racing name for Porsche, at Le Mans and other tracks, at Monte Carlo and other rallies, and in public.
No other street car has that same pedigree, some did the track (917.906908910911), some did the rallies ( 911/935/962/959), some did the public(CGT/911/Miura) But No other car has that same broad pedigree.
very few did it all like the 904 did. And I'm being generous , since quite frankly i can't find another car that was equally succesful on track/street/rally with full inhouse tech (chassis/body/engine)
i've seen em up close, at the Museum at Spa, at Le Mans
And I've heard em in anger, raced at Le Mans.. I was there to heard the mighty 917, but the 904 sounded way more angry on the same track.. Seriously those little cars sounded meaner then a junkyard dog.
