Wow, the personalized tag on my El Camino has been on the Elky for 30 years. It is white, with black letters. Very easy to see. In fact, it is the old style that were made in the prisons. It had the letters embossed or stamped into place. The new tags are just screen printed and totally flat.
For years the typical scam was to buy a used car, and never register it. Any parking tickets or turnpike use was billed to the former owner. If the car is pulled over the cops are supposed to impound it. Often the car was not worth keeping, so the police paid to have it sit on the impound lot for 90 days before i was sold or scrapped. They decided the car seller keeps the tag now, and the new car buyer has to get a tag within 10 days. Of course that requires proof of insurance. It will be interesting to see it that fixes the issue. I hope so.
