The directors cuts are often crazy long, and just no way to have a movie that long in a theater without a couple of intermissions.

It seems like when I was a teen in the 80s most movies were ~1.5 hours. And the long movies were 2 hours. These days, the short movies seem to be 2 hours, regular movies are 2.5 hours and the long movies are 3 hours or more.
