If I understand correctly, the noise was observed when car is not moving and the noise is a consistent tempo not affected by engine speed. This doesn't make sense to me. Everything that is rotating is tied to the crankshaft speed (clutch, throw-out bearing, transmission input shaft, and all the gears rotating on the output shaft that don't have engaged sliders). I don't think it's the gearbox.
Does the 89 have any soleniod-driven emissions stuff mounted near the gearbox? EGR valve cycling?
