I'm assuming that shifting is probably largely a function of the shifter/linkage.
I'm no expert, but thinking outloud, my guess is that shifting is probably best in the top of the list and worst in the bottom of the list.

shifter in tail of transmission (like a Tremec or the trans in a miata)
shifter bolted to transmission with solid linkage to side of transmission (like the old muncie and saginaw trannies)
shifter remote from transmission with solid linkage (older 911)
shifter remote from trans using cables (various fwd vehicles)
