Were I to consider buying this (and I am not in the market), I'd not view the bling or its lack as being very important - I can wire brush the exposed slightly rusted studs. Replating has never been on my agenda for my own motors. But all that paint wouldn't be a special plus for me. I, too, wonder why the cooling tin didn't have the modification Anderson pointed out in his first book long ago, but I wouldn't care about the rusty tin spring holders - they will never rust through or lose their needed tension, and you can't see them.
I do wonder why an engine which looks like it comes with carbs doesn't have the air injector holes plugged, though that is easy and not expensive to do. Is that because some purchaser might be in a state which requires the air injection on this motor? Can you even get that stuff any more?My concern with the scavenge pump output fitting is with tightening the oil line fitting with the return tube in place. Is there a special tool which works better than ordinary wrenches in this tight space?
My understanding is that spiffing up a mag case isn't very effective, as it quickly re-oxides or something back to its usual dull color? Just sort of makes you wonder. But I am a function over looks kind of guy.
