So, many/most of my drivers have cold hard money in hand before they rate me.

Cash tips are always appreciated by drivers but they are rare and the exception. I’ve been driving for Uber since August and I’ve gotten hundreds of tips in the app but only a small handful in cash. Fwiw, drivers get 100% of tips in the app but they would be lumped in with other revenue, which is taxable after expenses.
The way that the drivers app works is that the driver has to rate the passenger upon dropping them off, in order to complete the ride and be able to move on to the next one. A 5-star rating is the default, you need manually override it to input a different rating. It only takes a second but when it’s busy, it’s easier to just end the ride with a 5-star. Everyone gets a 5-star from me unless they are a POS person for one reason or another.
I could fill a whole page here with what I’ve observed wrt human nature in a few months of this job.
