The service is NASA and was paid for by taxpayers long ago.
I don't know how it all works, but other countries must also have their own signals constantly beaming down.
(Some are probably encrypted for other uses like encrypted HAM and cough partisan diplomatic communications recently. That all gets complicated.)
Unless Congress allows to deny the US general public access to satellite transmissions it should remain so.
The mapping software companies are within their own rights to sell their own product. I agree.
