I played football (real football, AKA "soccer" here in the States) through college. I was actually fairly good... Anyway, I wound up working with a Brit expatriate some years later who had followed a similar path, except playing rugby. We both continued to play our respective sports into our early 40's. There was, of course, no end to the back and forth regarding football v. rugby. His favorite quip was that "rugby is a hooligans' game played by gentlemen, football is a gentlemen's game played by hooligans".
