After I graduated high school at 17, I scored a job with California Parks And Recreation. I have mentioned it here before, it was for Park Maintenance at Sycamore Cyn campground and Cove, La Jolla Beach (now Thornehill Broome) and Leo Carrillo State Beach.
Leo Carillo had flush toilets and showers, Sycamore and La Jolla had Outhouse/ Porta Johns.
They knew I could drive large trucks, had a driver's license and offered me the job of "Pooper Pumper". It was an easy gig. You had this vacuum truck where you would take a big sucker hose, throw it into the "Hell Hole" and start pumping. You could tell when it was done when the vacuum pump hit a high pitch.
Unless you got a low pitch, that meant a clog. Usually a a large "Tampoon" pad was stuck and you'd just bang the the hose back and forth to get it loose. Sometimes it would "flip it's tail" like trout and you'd get a splash back (that sucked).
Anyway, I digress. I was doing my duty along the beach and a guy had his young son waiting to use the bathroom I was servicing and remarked "I would never do that".
My response was "Well you're not having to do it now are you? And if it meant feeding your son I bet you might think about doing it".
