My fares have been $5-$38 and my tips have all be $3-8 with one that was $12. That one was because the guy stopped at a place for me, so I tipped extra. I don't know if my tips are "right" or not. I figure a $5 tip for a $5-10 fare (usually <3 miles) is adequate.

If the fare is really low (like a low bill at a diner) I don't usually use a percentage. I went to lunch with a guy once, his bill for lunch was $6, and I think he tipped 90¢. I wouldn't wait on anyone for 45 mins for 90¢. I'm more likely to tip $4-5 in a situation like that.
