two years ago this person stopped into my shop asking if I could just clear coat over there 1992 Miata's existing single stage red. the body has no damage at all it was just the red paint kept dulling out even quickly after it was fully detailed.
the customer claimed he tried everything and all kinds of paint protection stuff on it and at best the shine would only last a month or two at the most.
I told him the finish is dead and should have a good sanding and repaint the hole car back in a single stage. because just clearing it the clear will peal in no time as the finish has lived it's life and dead!
when a clear other then it pealing is generally in good condition in most all cases its the base or undercoat that has failed not the clear.
yet another person didn't want to listen and they found a shop that would do what he wanted.
many shops will be happy to take your money !
this morning this guy showed back up at my shop saying he took the car back a few times to the shop that cleared it and they are not doing anything for him as he wants his cars now with pealing clear coat fixed.
he claims they did a ****ty job prepping the car before clearing it.
no not the case my guess is they did an ok job prepping the car it's just the clear has nothing to stick to any more with the failing undercoat red paint.
I gave him another estimate to repaint the car. now that the car pretty much needs to be stripped of it's clear and the failing single stage red under it. the estimate is more than the cars value this time.
moral to the story is if your cars single stage finish is dead or dying just clearing is not the answer and it's just going to add a **** load of labor and cost to fix the mess from doing so.
