About the ame in terms of travel time but I really think if you know the back streets, its a bit faster from LAX. For me, its LAX but traffic can be a bear within the airport. Traffic in smaller airports are always better.
Where will you be staying is a better question. Not much to do around LAX at night, much better around John Wayne.
