Yea, as a kid growing up in San Marcos, TX we had to learn some basic Spanish, but that was when I was 3rd grade I think. Of course in Hawaii they taught us some Hawaiian. And of course every state wanted us to lean some state history.
I remember how to count to 5 in Spanish, and as an adult I learned the most important phrase is cerveza por favor. Of course it usually came or as cervasa pour favor.
