I know that I could just power it from the car battery but would prefer to buy another battery (preferably smaller) and not sure how much smaller I can go. Any thoughts/suggestions welcome

In the Users Manual, it says to use jumper cables to connect the QuickJack control unit to the car battery, and recommends running the engine while you’re raising or lowering the lift. So I think trying to use the QuickJack with a small, stand-alone battery is probably a bad idea. Either use it with your vehicle battery and jumper cables, as instructed, or contact QuickJack, admit your ordering mistake, and ask them if they can exchange the 12v control unit for an AC powered unit. And be careful to pick the right one, because they offer both 110VAC and 220VAC units.
